Eighty years ago Thursday-Friday 25-26 December 1941

 Thursday 25 December Worked until 1:00 p.m.; had a slight headache. Xmas lunch at Maiden’s Grill Rooms. Went to Mess and had Xmas cake and tea. Wrote letter home.

Went to Davico’s, had Xmas dinner and cabaret at Maiden’s. Champagne and whisky a lot of money went west; not worth 1 minute at home.

Friday 26 December. Took out an Endowment Policy with Prudential £1,000 at age 55. Perhaps a mistake, but it is some safeguard. Went to Imperial Hotel and had a few drinks and a grill. Went around Old Delhi Chandni Chowk [one of the oldest and busiest markets in Old Delhi].

Little to report. On the pistol range firing; not a very accurate weapon. Went to soccer match, college vs. staff in the evening; surprised at high standard. I’d back them to lick Monmouth; some third division standard. No letters yet, I hope I hear soon, getting worried. Well, it’s getting near pay day. Another point is the excellent instructors here, the Non-Commissioned Officers, particularly, are fine fellows.

Eighty years ago today Tuesday 14 October 1941

Drill, Maintenance, Urdu test (not so good, may affect postings a good deal). Lectures on Training and Embarking. Demonstration Rooms at 5:00 p.m. More notes to finish. Received Beacon [possibly the Monmouthshire Beacon newspaper] from Did and very nice letter, the news was exceedingly interesting. Speech Day, all the names make me feel old – mere First formers when I left. An hour’s reading now, 2 minutes when at home.

Eighty years ago today Wednesday 25 June 1941

Awoke before 5:30 a.m. and as usual started the day. We did three periods of TEWT on attack before breakfast at 10:30 a.m. Was hungry? No food since tea yesterday. D&M, two CM followed by one ATT (anti-tank training). Had a lecture at 6:30 p.m. by a cadet of [undecipherable word] who had been with the KOLIs [perhaps KOYLI – King’s Own Yorkshire Light Infantry] in France. Started to rain as I left so had to change. D&M should become very interesting.
