Eighty years ago today Tuesday 15 April 1941

  A day on the Plain; very tiring especially as I had a bad pain in the stomach. I was tempted to go sick, but carried on. Luckily, we went out on cycles. Today I had photograph from Renée, an enlargement of one I liked. Also had mine taken; don’t know the result. Had a very severe pain in the evening, took peppermint, bis magn [possibly a patent medicine containing bismuth subsalicylate][1]. Went to the Mess, foolishly, and had a job getting back. Took three aspirin and went straight to bed with a blanket.

  Not so early getting up; feeling very dirty from dust and smoke of the train had chota hazri , no breakfast. Fine train, three fans to our compartment, shower, bath, etc. Passed through Delhi last night, must be very interesting. On and on, little change except for an occasional station. Went to bed early; it was very hot – I was practically wet through.

Eighty years ago today Saturday 2 August 1941

We had not undressed since we had arrived and had had very little sleep, so we were glad to roll up the tents and stack all equipment. At 9:00 a.m. we went off on another Forest Warfare scheme until lunch and at 2:00 p.m. arrived back in Bangalore, a dirty, dishevelled party. Unfortunately, we had to attend a lecture on ‘Eritrea’, which was made even worse as a terrific deluge made us wet through. Bed at 7:00 p.m.
