Eighty years ago today Friday 1 August 1941
I didn’t realise until later that it was August Bank Holiday. We had until 12 noon to rest, then off again. That night we went out at 5:00 p.m. and took a defensive position. After an attack, we made a 6 mile [9.3 km] withdrawal across country and rolled up at camp at midnight for hot omelettes. Slept soundly until 6:00 a.m. and started packing up for movement to Bangalore.
