Eighty years ago today Sunday 4 May 1941
Awoke 8:00 a.m., had breakfast and went to service. It is cooler today; quite pleasant. War news doesn’t seem to good. Saw that Brittania[1] had gone down, perhaps that’s where our correspondence is. Starting my usual letters now. Did a spot of work in the afternoon and in the evening I went to service.
[1] S.S. Britannia, en route from UK to India, sunk by gunfire by the German raider Thor, 720 miles west of Freetown, Sierra Leone.
