Eighty years ago today Thursday 28 August 1941
Up again and rolled up bedding for the last time. Passed through Lahore. Noticed that country was changing slowly, also the people were lighter skinned, bigger and dressed differently. Both men and women wear strange kinds of trousers. Also noted that the real Mohammedan women were completely covered, face and head, with a small net face piece, a strange custom. Arrived at Rawalpindi and pushed on to Taxila. Now at Taxila and then train to Havelian [the second largest municipality in the Abbottabad District, in the Hazara Division, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province of Pakistan], which we reached at 8:30 p.m. Met by Commander and after the usual business with the luggage, got into taxis for breath taking ride up mountain slopes to Kakul. Reported to the Adjutant and had a meal. Mess not as good as that at Bangalore. Had to wait for luggage. Room bare, dirty and untidy, beds hard and cold. Hired new Bearer at the station and fixed up a bed and fell into it at 1:00 a.m.
